PHD student suicides at Hyderabad University
Rohit Vermula(26) a second year PHD student at University of Hyderabad
committed suicide on Sunday evening.Rohit was one of the active member of the
protest against Yakub Memon. Yakub Memon was a convict of Mumbai serial blast
where 256 people were killed. Rohit was also an active member of Students
politics in the campus. He was expelled from hostel due to his involvement in
an alleged attack on ABPV activist Nandanam Susheel Kumar.
He
along with ASA (Amberkar Students Association),IIT and some other students
organisation were making documentary on Muzaffarnagar riot with the name
“Muzaffarnagar abhi baaki hai”.The documentary was opposed by some ABVP
activists calling it anti hindu and they disrupted the screening due to which
the dispute was started between them. The oppose was turned into some violent
actions by both the sides. This incident resulted into expulsion of Rohit
Vermula along with four other students from hostel considering their
involvement in an attack on Nandanam Sushil Kumar (ABVP activist). The suspended
students were then protesting on their expulsion from hostel for 12 days in the
campus before Rohit’s suicide. They were sleeping in open in campus area as a
part of their protest.
In the suicide
note Rohit has mentioned that nobody is the reason behind his suicide but the
incident was strongly protested by many students and politicians from all over
the country blaming the university as the reason of his suicide. The issue is
also turned to caste due to his identity as Dalit and he was also fighting for
Dalit rights. But overall the incident is nowhere linked with any religion and
their sentiments.
