ASA (Ambedkar
Students Association) is the student organization working for Dalit and
minority students for their rights. Rohit Vermula who hanged himself on Sunday
evening was an active member of ASA at Hyderabad Central University. The
association was found by the PHD scholar Rajashekhar in 1993.The association
works on various issue of Dalit and Minority students. In the early period of
90’s University had many issue with ragging and some other issues with Dalits
but ASA developed reputation for responding aggressively. The fight between
ABVP and ASA has been a long issue at the campus. There were many physical
violence actions were reported before.
Rohit was a
follower of Ambedkar and he was also a thinker who wanted to space for Dalit in
country which attracted him to join ASA. Before the expulsion of Rohit and his
four other friends some around 10 students were also expelled from University
in year 2002. Earlier there was no involvement from outsiders was allowed at
Hyderabad university campus but later on all the political parties have
increased their approach attracted by aggressive associations setting up in the
campus. The letter written by Union minister was one of the example of
political interference in the university. ABVP and many other organizations
have set up now at the campus and many are linked with different political
parties.
